The Winter Paradox

Your eyes are running down your cheeks, and we’re about to tell you they’re dry.

Every winter, patients walk into our Matthews office with the same story: gritty eyes by 3 p.m., blurry vision that clears when they blink, and (plot twist!) eyes that water constantly. “How can I have dry eye when my eyes won’t stop running?” they ask.

What they are experiencing is dry eye disease — the most misnamed condition in eye care. And once the heat pumps kick on across Union and Mecklenburg counties, it gets noticeably worse.

What a Carolina Winter Does to Your Tear Film

Your tears aren’t just water. They’re a three-layer film — oil, water, and mucin — and winter goes after all three:

  • Forced air, everywhere you go. Your house, your office, your car on the Independence Boulevard crawl. Heated air is dry air, and it’s blowing straight at your face for months.
  • Cold snaps off the mountains. A morning walk at Stumptown Park, a Saturday on the Four Mile Creek Greenway, or a chilly evening at the Sportsplex will strip your tear film faster than you can zip your jacket.
  • Screens, all day. We blink up to 60% less when we stare at a monitor. Fewer blinks, less tear spread — and shorter winter days mean even more screen time.
  • Holiday everything. Late nights, travel, wood smoke, and pressurized airplane cabins — a full seasonal assault on your eyes.

When the tear film breaks down, the eye surface gets irritated and sends a panic signal to your reflex tear glands. The result? A flood of low-quality, watery tears that spill down your cheeks and do almost nothing to actually protect your eye. Hence the paradox: watery eyes are one of the most common signs of dry eye.

You Are Not Alone

Dry eye disease affects at least 16 million Americans, with some estimates pushing undiagnosed cases to 30 million or even 49 million, making it one of the most common ocular surface conditions in the world. If you’ve been quietly blaming your contacts, your age, or your monitor — come get your eyes checked. What you’re dealing with is likely a real, diagnosable, and very treatable medical condition.

The Good News: Real Relief Starts at the Eyelid

For decades, dry eye care meant one thing: putting something on the eye. Artificial tears help, but they’re a top-up, not a fix.

Here’s what changed the conversation. The majority of dry eye is evaporative — meaning the problem isn’t that you make too little tear fluid, it’s that the oil layer holding your tears in place has gone missing. That oil comes from tiny meibomian glands lining each eyelid, and those glands clog. Makeup, skincare, bacteria, biofilm, and Demodex mites (yes, everybody has some) build up along the lash line until the glands can’t deliver. Without oil on top, your tears evaporate almost as fast as you make them.

You can’t fix a plumbing problem by pouring more water on the floor. You have to clear the pipes.

Yearly Eyelid Cleaning with NuLids® Pro

Think of it the way you think about a dental cleaning. You brush every day, and you still go in once a year to have a professional get what the toothbrush can’t. Your eyelids deserve the same standard of care — and almost nobody gives it to them.

At Union Family Eye Associates, we use NuLids® Pro, a professional-grade eyelid hygiene system. A soft, medical-grade silicone tip oscillates gently along the lash line and lid margin, lifting away the debris, bacteria, and biofilm that build up over a year and helping to free up the meibomian glands underneath. The tip is firmer than the at-home version, so the clean goes deeper.

What it’s like: About a minute per eye. You sit back with your eyes closed, and the sensation is closer to a gentle vibration than anything clinical. No needles, no numbing drops, no downtime. Most patients are surprised it’s over that quickly.

How often: We recommend a NuLids® Pro cleaning once a year. You can schedule it alongside your annual comprehensive eye exam so it’s one trip, not two. If you wear lash extensions, wear eye makeup daily, have been diagnosed with blepharitis or meibomian gland dysfunction, or your symptoms are flaring, we may suggest coming in more often.

Who it helps: Anyone with gritty, burning, watery eyes, or fluctuating vision — but also anyone who simply wants to keep their glands working. Meibomian glands that stay blocked long enough can atrophy permanently, and glands don’t grow back. Yearly maintenance is genuinely easier than recovery.

And When Lids Need More: ZEST

For lids that are especially inflamed or crusted, we also offer ZEST (Zocular Eyelid System Treatment) in our Matthews office. It uses a natural okra-based gel worked along the lash margin to deep-clean and calm the lid, and it pairs well with NuLids® Pro. We’ll tell you at your evaluation which one makes more sense for your lids — or whether both do. You can read more about both on our dry eye page.

Keeping It Up Between Visits

A yearly professional cleaning works best when it’s paired with a few simple habits at home:

  • Warm compresses – five to ten minutes, to soften the oils before they harden.
  • An omega-3 supplement – which supports the quality of the oil your glands produce.
  • A humidifier in the bedroom – the single easiest win during heating season, when the furnace runs all night.
  • The 20-20-20 rule – every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds. It resets your blink rate.
  • Daily lid hygiene – ask us about the at-home NuLids® device if you want to carry the same approach through the rest of the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is dry eye really worse in winter in Matthews? For most of our patients, yes. Outdoor humidity matters less than what happens indoors: heating drops the relative humidity in your home and office dramatically, and car defrosters, cold wind, and increased screen time during dark months all reduce tear film stability.

Can I just use artificial tears? They help temporarily. They don’t address blocked oil glands, inflammation, or reduced tear production, which is why lid-margin treatment exists.

Are watery eyes a sign of dry eye? Frequently. A dry, irritated ocular surface can trigger reflex tearing — poor-quality tears that spill over instead of coating the eye.

Does the NuLids® Pro treatment hurt? No. Patients typically describe it as a light buzzing along the lashes. Nothing touches the eye itself, and you can drive, work, and wear makeup the same day.
